‘Why is council shutting down my thriving business that I want to pass on to my daughter?’
Owner of Derby cafe Uncle Tom’s Cabin furious it will be demolished

The joint owner of well-known Derby city centre cafe Uncle Tom’s Cabin has hit back at Derby City Council plans to close the 68-year-old business and demolish the Osnabruck Square venue. Paul Rogers says that he is not happy with the situation and that he has met with the council only once when he was given the bad news.
The demolition of three kiosks in the square, including Uncle Tom’s, is part of a £35 million plan to repair and refurbish the grade II-listed Market Hall and includes a proposal to make the area outside the hall into an open public event and seating area. The demolition is part of the new planning application that was submitted last week.
The council has said it is working with Mr Rogers to secure the future of the business but Mr Rogers says that is not his experience and that he was told only two months ago about the plan involving his business and that it could be be up to 12-18 months when demolition takes place. He added: «But even that did not seem definite, leaving everything very uncertain.»
He said: «We were called into the meeting and told how wonderful the refurbished Market Hall is going to be but at no point were we offered a stall in there or the opportunity to have an alternative spot elsewhere in the city. They have not been working with us so far about the future.

«Instead they are closing us down with no offer or guarantee of an alternative, which I would want to see in black and white. This is a thriving business and I had no intention of closing and wanted to pass the business on to my daughter Kate, who has been working here for eight years, when I eventually retire.
«My wife Dawn is the niece of the original Uncle Tom founder, Tommy Barnes, so we wanted to keep it in the family. I find it all very upsetting and as a family it is very disappointing.
«Closing this will put four people on the dole and leave many customers without somewhere to go. I thought at the very least, the council would have offered us a spot in the new Market Hall but maybe we are not up-market enough.
«But rest assured, we will keep trading for as long as we are able to and will not give up this business easily because we have traded for so long and we have a duty to our customers.»
Since an article appeared on Derbyshire Live about the proposed demolition on Tuesday, hundreds of people have commented on the Derbyshire Live Facebook page condemning the plan to remove the cafe and talking about the part the place has played in their lives.
.Mr Rogers said he is glad that people feel so strongly about the business. He said: «The council has no idea what Uncle Tom’s means to the people of Derby. It’s not just a business, the people who come here are like a big family and everyone is made to feel welcome.
Among the comments are a couple who became engaged over a cuppa at Uncle Tom’s and others who recall stopping off for a sausage cob while out shopping regularly on a Saturday morning.
There are currently three kiosks in the square with one of the others being temporarily occupied by nearby Artcore. The current kiosks in Osnabruck Square were constructed almost 40 years ago but Uncle Tom’s Cabin was originally founded in a previous wooden building by Tommy Barnes in 1954. In 1975, the business celebrated its 21st birthday with free cups of tea for all of its loyal customers.
All three kiosks are proposed to be demolished to open up the space, with their footprints being resurfaced with concrete pavers, to tie in with the existing surrounding paving design.
A city council spokesman said that the deadline for demolition of the Osnabruck Square kiosks will not be decided until planning permission is granted and a programme of work is drawn up and added that the city council has discussed options about moving into the Market Hall.
A Derby City Council spokesman said: «We have been working with Uncle Tom’s Cabin since the autumn of 2020 and are continuing those conversations to secure the best possible future. We have also talked to the owners about future plans and options for securing a place in the transformed Market Hall.»
